Volunteer: Patient Care - Recover Support in Surgery

Role Purpose

To provide a safe, calm, and warm environment for cats and dogs as they emerge from anesthesia. This role is critical in the 30–60 minutes immediately following surgery, ensuring that patients wake up smoothly, stay warm, and are monitored for any signs of distress before returning to their kennels.

Key Responsibilities

Anesthesia Monitoring: Watch for regular breathing patterns and monitor gum color (capillary refill time) as directed by medical staff.

Temperature Regulation: Use warming blankets, heat discs, or "snuggle safes" to prevent hypothermia, which is common after surgery.

Extubation Support: Alert technicians when a patient begins to swallow so the breathing tube (endotracheal tube) can be safely removed.

Post-Op Comfort: Gently "tuck in" recovering pets, ensuring they are positioned correctly to keep their airways clear.

Sanitation: Clean and prep recovery bays/crates between patients to maintain a sterile environment.

Alert System: Immediately notify the veterinary team of any abnormalities, such as shivering, vocalization, or slow wake-up times.

Volunteer: Public Patient Check-in

Role Purpose

To streamline the morning "check-in" rush and afternoon "discharge" window. You are the primary point of contact for the public, ensuring that all paperwork is completed accurately and that both humans and animals feel calm and welcomed upon arrival.

Key Responsibilities

Greeting & Triage: Welcome clients as they arrive, identify the reason for their visit, and ensure pets are safely leashed or in secure carriers.

Intake Paperwork: Assist owners in completing surgical consent forms, anesthesia waivers, and contact information updates.

Weight & ID Checks: Escort pets to the lobby scale to record an accurate weight and ensure ID collars/tags match the digital records.

Lobby Management: Keep the waiting area orderly. If a "reactive" dog or a highly stressed cat arrives, assist in finding them a quiet corner or a vacant exam room to wait in.

Patient Status Liaison: Act as a bridge between the front desk and the surgical technicians. Notify the medical team when a patient has arrived and is ready for "pre-op."

Comfort Support: Offer water, tissues, or coffee to waiting owners. For nervous pets, you may provide "distraction treats" (if cleared by the medical staff).
